ADVICE FOR NEW USERS

How to move around

If you already use internet browsers you will find there are many familiar features within this site as it is built with a linked web page structure that allows basic navigation through browser functions.

New users may want to take some time out to get familiar with internet usage before using the training programs on this site.

Before going any further...
can you see the contents of this page easily?
If not try out the scroll bars -
They may look like this:

-on the side if page is longer than window can display,

or at the bottom if the page is too wide.

This is an illustration only, not a live scroll bar. Use the scroll bars on the edges of the window you are looking at to move its contents.
This is an illustration only, not a live scroll bar. Use the scroll bars on the edges of the window you are looking at to move its contents.
  • Click arrows at ends of scroll bar to move page in that direction (up-down or side-to-side).

  • You can also click on the slide bars and drag them while holding down the mouse button.

Normally scroll bars only show if needed.

If you're not happy with scrolling you may be able to change your screen 'resolution'. But more on that later.

First we need to get new users familiar with their computer and using the internet.

If you think you need it, some initial advice or training on basic internet use should be worth the effort. Find someone you know who can help get you started with the basics.

General tips on moving around, how to start and finish, and some extra technical assistance are provided below.

If there is a printer connected to you computer you can get a printed copy of information being displayed by clicking the "print" button (also known as icon) on your screen.  Here's an example found on many computers.  Some may look a little different.

Test this now if you want a paper copy of these tips.

GENERAL TIPS

Here are some general tips for new users.

Moving to particular parts of the web site is done by clicking on navigation buttons or hyperlinks.  Here are examples of what they look like:

These are illustrations only, not live buttons.
  • Coloured areas of text known as hyperlinks that may change colour when your mouse pointer is on them and the pointer changes from an arrow to a little hand. Clicking a hyperlink takes you to where it has been directed.

(The pointers on some computers may be different but will probably still change when on a hyperlink.)

  • Some graphics (pictures, photos, etc) are also active hyperlinks.  These will be pointed out to you...

or you can discover them as you move your mouse around.

How to start

Before you start a training program you will have been given a student login name and a password. You need to be connected to the KAB Institute website (www.kabinstitute.com).

Click the 'Student' navigation button (see example above) and a student login  page will open.
Enter your login name and password and click the login button.

You will then see a list of courses you are enrolled in.
Click the hyperlink to the course you want to start or go back to.

Hyperlinks (this is one) are described above.

Moving between pages of a course

Your browser's forward and back buttons take you to the next or previous page in a sequence you have already visited. This is a normal windows browser function, but beware:
You can't go forward if you haven't already been there and backed up.
You can easily back up further than you actually want to, even right out of your course.

Once logged into a course you can easily move to next, previous or any selected page by clicking where you want to go on the course navigation panel. This is an example of what it may look like:

This illustration is not linked elsewhere but within a course you can click on the page you want to see next

How to finish

A good thing about using these training programs is that you can do as much or as little as you like at any one time.  You do not have to do anything fancy like naming and saving data files.  Just close your browser window.

Closing a browser windowOn most computers a quick way of closing is to click the little box marked X in the top right corner.

Some computers are set up differently though, so be prepared to ask for help.

Screen Resolution & Colours

Different computers have different screen setups. Your computer is likely to be set to one of three resolutions - 640x480 pixels, 800x600 pixels or 1024x768 pixels (where the numbers represent the width and height of your screen). Pixels are the little dots that combine to form the characters and graphics you see on the screen.

This website will look very big on the 640x480 resolution, will sit comfortably on 800x600 (the most common resolution) and look quite condensed on 1024x768 (the newest screen resolution).

If you have a computer which
is only a few years old, you
will be able to change the
screen resolution by simply
changing the Display/
Settings or the Control
Panel/Monitor of your
computer.

The number of colours
displayed on your monitor will
also affect the quality of the
images displayed in a
website. The colour palette
should read a minimum of 256
colours, but if your computer
can handle it, it is preferable
to select High Colour (16bit) or
True Colour (24bit)

Which Browser do I have?

The first screen which comes up will display which Browser and version you are using.

You can also upgrade your browser for free by going to the Netscape or Microsoft websites and downloading the latest version. Often there is a special area called Downloads where the latest Browsers and other programs are available.

How do I print a page from this website?
